Quantity Surveyor

Two fantastic opportunities for ambitious quantity surveyors to join a large water utilities client and take their career to the next level in the South West of the UK. Working on a permanent staff basis, projects would be based throughout the Somerset/Wiltshire/Dorset regions and would ideally match up successful candidates to local projects wherever possible.

These opportunities will be working with the design & build arm of the business, designing and building infrastructure for water operation in the region, building sewage treatment works, pumping stations, reservoirs through sustainable delivery methods.

Typically scope of projects you will be covering would range from values of £100k – £7million usually lasting between 6-18 months in duration.

Typically in both opportunities available you will:

manage all aspects of pre and post contract duties for major projects, ranging in value up to a maximum of £30m

  • Manage contract change, opportunity and risk, payment applications and final accounts, in addition to carrying out project forecasting and reporting
  • Work closely with other team members, such as project managers, designers, engineers and estimators, as well as attending regular financial meetings with senior department staff
  • Work to financial targets and deadlines, interpret project programmes, understand risk, and react to the demands of construction delivery to ensure best value for the company.

Most of all, you are expected to understand, and be committed to, the company mission, values, goals and department ethos.

What is needed for consideration?

In order to succeed in this role, you should ideally have:

  • Quantity surveying experience in the construction industry, preferably with experience in the NEC Suite of Contracts
  • Completed a degree in quantity surveying or similar construction-related qualification
  • Membership of the RICS/ICES is also desirable but not essential
  • A strong attention to detail, self-motivation, a problem-solving nature and a drive to succeed
  • The ability to interpret technical/design detail to assist in problem solving and valuing engineering options as appropriate
  • Experience with change and risk management, as well as tender and final account negotiation skills
  • Have good people skills, including leadership skills and the ability to foster professional relations with others
  • A strong customer focus, while also being a team player
  • A sound knowledge of health and safety related to the role

As this position will require travel between client offices and construction sites. A full driving licence is also required.

Working structure:

  • Successful candidates would generally be expected to spend 2/3 days at site and or the office with the option to remote work for the remainder.

The Company

Our client has recently been awarded a 7-year contract for the maintenance and improvement of the Defence Built Estate, to include in excess of 20,000 assets.

They are a new business, formed to deliver infrastructure, asset, and facilities management services into the UK Defence Sector. They are a 50:50 Joint Venture between 2 already established big players in the FM and Utilities markets with over 55 years’ experience.

They are committed to enabling Defence capability through maintaining and enhancing the built estate in which our Armed Forces live, work and train.

The role

This is an exciting and busy role working on a large facilities management contract for the MOD. The role will be varied with lots of opportunity for ongoing development.

Duties will include:

* Booking appointments, hot desk, gate access and the meeting room

* Preparation and maintenance of reports as directed by management

* Preparation of meeting minutes, action logs and agendas as required by management.

* Keeping all H&S warning notices in an index file and send out to each office when received, ownership of all required Noticeboards (H&S etc) ensuring they are kept up to date

* Complete the monthly Health and Safety (H&S) return to the Head of HSEQ by the required date

* Promote a culture of customer service and the meeting of company objectives and values.

Could this be for you?

You will need to have general office experience in a customer focused, high volume construction, property maintenance or related field, with some knowledge and experience of working within strict ISO policies and processes.

It would also be beneficial if you have experience of operating in a military environment, but this is not essential, but someone who continually reviews working practices and procedures, seeking to improve efficiency and effectiveness is essential.

You will ned to be educated to NVQ Level 2 standard or have had equivalent experience, with good working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Previous experience of using CAFM Maximo would be ideal but not essential.
