Site Engineer – A66 Highways, Penrith
£450 per day | PAYE Umbrella | 3-Month Initial Contract with Scope for Extension
Our client, a Tier 1 principal contractor, is seeking an experienced Site Engineer to join the team delivering major highways works on the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine project near Penrith – one of National Highways’ flagship road investment schemes, upgrading the A66 to dual carriageway between the M6 and Scotch Corner.
This is a great opportunity for a highways-experienced Site Engineer to join a high-profile, long-running National Highways scheme with genuine scope to extend well beyond the initial contract.
What You’ll Be Doing

  • Leading and controlling site works for a specific discipline, across both self-delivered and subcontracted packages
  • Maintaining comprehensive site records, including detailed daily site diaries
  • Validating allocation sheets and carrying out setting out and dimensional checks
  • Maintaining survey records and producing as-built drawings
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings (reinforcement, drainage, earthworks)
  • Supervising graduate and trainee engineers
  • Managing specific site operations, including subcontractors
  • Contributing to weekly programmes and producing short-term schedules, monitoring progress against programme
  • Producing Works Package Plans, Method Statements, Risk Assessments and Task Briefing Sheets
  • Producing Permits to Dig and briefing the workforce accordingly
  • Delivering daily activity briefings, safety inspections and hazard identification
  • Contributing to quality documentation and raising workmanship/quality issues where needed

What You’ll Need

  • Highways project experience
  • 2-3 years’ experience with a Tier 1 contractor
  • Degree, HND or HNC in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
  • Valid UK driving licence and CSCS card
  • SSSTS or SMSTS qualified
  • Strong understanding of construction site safety and current H&S legislation
  • Understanding of environmental issues (noise, dust, light, ecology) and project environmental management plans
  • Solid knowledge of setting out techniques, with the ability to coach team members
  • Strong knowledge of construction processes in one or more of: Earthworks/Drainage, Pavement, Comms, Structures, or Roadworks
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks

Desirable

  • Basic understanding of temporary works
  • Basic understanding of utilities
  • Basic understanding of lifting operations
  • Working towards a professional qualification (ICE, CIHT etc.)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Civil, Structural & Architectural (CSA) Engineer to join a major nuclear infrastructure programme supporting critical asset life extension works at Sellafield.

You’ll play a key role in delivering the feasibility study and developing refurbishment options for Building B314, a strategically important operational facility that supports access and welfare for personnel entering the active areas of the Sellafield site. This is a technically challenging project requiring innovative engineering solutions while ensuring the building remains fully operational throughout the programme.

The Role

Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will:

  • Deliver and contribute to the feasibility study for the refurbishment of Building B314’s roof and building envelope.
  • Develop practical, cost-effective engineering solutions that meet operational, safety and customer requirements.
  • Lead and coordinate engineering work packages across multiple disciplines.
  • Participate in and support design reviews, HAZOPs and technical assurance activities.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers.
  • Ensure compliance with company quality management systems, engineering standards and relevant legislation.
  • Work collaboratively with project stakeholders to deliver high-quality engineering outputs.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for an experienced engineer who can work independently while providing technical leadership on complex engineering projects.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Minimum 5 years’ engineering design experience.
  • At least 5 years’ experience working within a highly regulated industry, ideally including 3 years within nuclear.
  • Previous experience supervising or mentoring engineering teams.
  • Strong knowledge of civil, structural and architectural engineering principles.
  • Experience delivering feasibility studies, refurbishment or asset life extension projects.
  • The ability to coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities.
  • A good understanding of relevant engineering codes, standards and safety legislation.
  • HNC/HND as a minimum (Degree preferred).
  • Evidence of continued professional development (Chartered status desirable).

Security Requirements

Candidates must be eligible to work within the UK nuclear industry and hold or be able to obtain the following:

  • BPSS Clearance (minimum to start)
  • Sellafield Site Clearance (SL Clearance)
  • P1 or P4 Pass
  • SC Clearance is desirable (or transferable if already held with another organisation)
