Site Engineer – A66 Highways, Penrith
£450 per day | PAYE Umbrella | 3-Month Initial Contract with Scope for Extension
Our client, a Tier 1 principal contractor, is seeking an experienced Site Engineer to join the team delivering major highways works on the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine project near Penrith – one of National Highways’ flagship road investment schemes, upgrading the A66 to dual carriageway between the M6 and Scotch Corner.
This is a great opportunity for a highways-experienced Site Engineer to join a high-profile, long-running National Highways scheme with genuine scope to extend well beyond the initial contract.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Leading and controlling site works for a specific discipline, across both self-delivered and subcontracted packages
- Maintaining comprehensive site records, including detailed daily site diaries
- Validating allocation sheets and carrying out setting out and dimensional checks
- Maintaining survey records and producing as-built drawings
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings (reinforcement, drainage, earthworks)
- Supervising graduate and trainee engineers
- Managing specific site operations, including subcontractors
- Contributing to weekly programmes and producing short-term schedules, monitoring progress against programme
- Producing Works Package Plans, Method Statements, Risk Assessments and Task Briefing Sheets
- Producing Permits to Dig and briefing the workforce accordingly
- Delivering daily activity briefings, safety inspections and hazard identification
- Contributing to quality documentation and raising workmanship/quality issues where needed
What You’ll Need
- Highways project experience
- 2-3 years’ experience with a Tier 1 contractor
- Degree, HND or HNC in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
- Valid UK driving licence and CSCS card
- SSSTS or SMSTS qualified
- Strong understanding of construction site safety and current H&S legislation
- Understanding of environmental issues (noise, dust, light, ecology) and project environmental management plans
- Solid knowledge of setting out techniques, with the ability to coach team members
- Strong knowledge of construction processes in one or more of: Earthworks/Drainage, Pavement, Comms, Structures, or Roadworks
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and influencing skills
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks
Desirable
- Basic understanding of temporary works
- Basic understanding of utilities
- Basic understanding of lifting operations
- Working towards a professional qualification (ICE, CIHT etc.)
