Senior Safety, Health & Environmental Advisor
Chorley, Lancashire | Permanent
£50,000-£55,000 + Package
Make a visible impact on Safety, Health & Environmental performance
We’re looking for an experienced Safety, Health & Environmental (SHE) professional to join a busy engineering and manufacturing environment in Chorley.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys being visible on the shop floor, working alongside operational and engineering teams, challenging unsafe behaviours and providing pragmatic advice that makes a genuine difference.
You’ll play a key role in maintaining and continually improving SHE standards across the business, supporting engineering, manufacturing, projects, contractors and site activities.
The Role
As Senior SHE Advisor, you will provide competent SHE advice and guidance across the business, helping ensure compliance with legislation, company procedures and ISO management systems.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing practical SHE advice across engineering, manufacturing, projects and site operations.
- Identifying hazards and supporting the assessment and control of risks to people, plant, equipment and the environment.
- Reviewing and supporting risk assessments and RAMS, ensuring controls are suitable and effective.
- Providing SHE input into engineering, design, modification and project activities.
- Carrying out inspections, audits, observations and compliance activities.
- Supporting and overseeing contractor activities, inductions and agreed control measures.
- Leading or supporting investigations into accidents, near misses, RIDDOR events and environmental incidents.
- Identifying root causes and ensuring corrective and preventative actions are followed through.
- Monitoring operational activities and confidently intervening where standards are not being met.
- Working closely with engineering, project and operational teams to deliver safe and compliant outcomes.
- Supporting the development and continuous improvement of SHE policies, procedures and processes.
- Delivering toolbox talks, briefings, training and SHE communications.
- Contributing to SHE performance reporting, KPIs, audits and improvement initiatives.
- Promoting a positive and proactive SHE culture throughout the organisation.
The role requires someone who is comfortable getting out into the operation rather than simply managing SHE from a desk. You’ll need to build credibility with employees, managers, engineers, contractors and senior stakeholders while being prepared to positively challenge when required.
About You
We’re looking for a practical and experienced SHE professional, typically with 3-5+ years’ experience in a dedicated SHE role.
You’ll ideally have:
- Experience within engineering, manufacturing, fabrication, industrial projects or another technical environment.
- Strong experience in risk assessments, RAMS, contractor management, incident investigation, audits and compliance.
- Experience applying SHE principles within operational environments.
- The confidence to engage with and influence operational teams at all levels.
- A credible and visible presence, with the ability to positively challenge behaviours and standards.
- Strong technical SHE knowledge combined with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- The ability to work independently, use initiative and make sound practical decisions.
- A collaborative approach and the ability to build strong relationships across the business.
- Experience working within a regulated environment, such as nuclear, defence, construction or a similar sector, would be advantageous.
- Experience supporting engineering, design or modification activities is also highly desirable.
Qualifications
Essential:
- NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety.
- Tech IOSH membership or working towards.
- Working knowledge of ISO 45001 / ISO 14001 management systems.
Desirable:
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate/Chartered IOSH membership.
- Environmental qualification such as IEMA.
- Experience working with CDM Regulations.
The Person
This isn’t a role for someone just starting out in SHE, or someone whose background is primarily production, quality or operations with limited dedicated SHE experience.
We’re looking for someone who can hit the ground running, build relationships quickly and become a trusted SHE partner to the business.
You’ll be someone who:
- Is confident operating in engineering and manufacturing environments.
- Can communicate effectively with everyone from shop-floor employees to senior management.
- Knows when to advise, when to challenge and when to take action.
- Takes a pragmatic, solutions-focused approach to SHE.
- Is self-motivated, organised and comfortable working independently.
- Is passionate about maintaining and improving high standards of safety, health and environmental performance.
Why Apply?
This is an opportunity to join an established engineering and manufacturing environment in a role where your experience, judgement and influence will be genuinely valued.
If you’re an experienced SHE professional who enjoys being close to the operation, solving problems, influencing people and driving continuous improvement, we’d like to hear from you.
