International Women’s Day 2019

The 8th of March has come around again and that can only mean one thing, International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. International Women’s Day has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911.

This year the theme of the day is Balance for Better which is all around making sure that a balanced world is a better world. Asking yourself how you can you help forge a more gender-balanced world as well as celebrating women’s achievement and raising awareness against bias behaviour. And above all else making sure that we all take action for equality.

At Highfield we are passionate about paving the way for equality and will always employ and reward for hard work and dedication and not based on gender. Recruitment can be a heavily male dominated industry, this is certainly not reflected at Highfield. We have a 60/40 Male/Female split at present and we are working to get that to 50/50. We have many amazing women working at Highfield, both part and full time across the sales floor and the operations team.

Kirsty has been with Highfield for three and a half years and is a prime example of how hard work and dedication provides you with a rewarding career and work life balance. From promotions to incentives, Kirsty has achieved a lot in the last few years.

Kirsty is a mother of 3 young boys which includes a set of twins that keeps her very busy at home! When asked about her work/life balance she commented on it saying “It’s excellent, I work for 24 hours over 4 days which gives me the perfect work/life balance so I can still enjoy taking and picking my children up from school and spend the evenings with them.” This is something we are passionate about at Highfield, we offer part time, flexible hours which helps parents especially to enable them to look after their children and work the hours that fits around their home schedule.

She got into recruitment when a good friend of hers encouraged her to go to an assessment day and since then she has not looked back. Before working at Highfield she had been working for another recruitment company but decided to join Highfield for many different reasons. One of those being the incentives and rewards available, which she consistently achieves for going above and beyond in her role. Another reason is the Highfield Culture, we aren’t corporate or a start-up but she still gets the family feel of working in a close knit team with an excellent reputation in the market.

Since starting at Highfield Kirsty has had many great achievements. The biggest one being promoted to Principal Consultant. As a part time employee this is an outstanding achievement. This promotion was achieved because of her constant hard work and dedication. In the last 12 months Kirsty has hit many incentives including numerous lunch clubs and being able to treat her husband to dinner in Hu Tong on the 33rd floor of The Shard. Kirsty is consistently one of the top sales performers at Highfield and made the top 10 in 2018 which is even more impressive when she only works part time.

At Highfield we will continue to employ and appreciate all the women we have in the company. Everyone is treated exactly the same and will always be recognised for the work that they put into their job.

Construction Trends for 2019

Construction Trends is always a talked about topic and 2019 is expected to be a breakthrough year for the Construction Industry. With the industry continuously evolving and the skills and technology developing at the pace they are, there is no doubt we are going to see some groundbreaking trends for 2019 and beyond.

Construction Technology in the last year alone has increased by 30% and that is only set to be on a rise over the next decade. So, what are the top construction trends set to make 2019 the breakout year?

Augmented Reality
Augmented reality is going to open many new opportunities for the construction industry due to its ability to provide a lot of information. One of these is through accuracy, as it will be able to show the entire project before it even starts, saving a lot of time and money. It will offer everyone that is part of the project the ability to finalise details before the construction begins, providing a much more efficient process.

Self-healing Concrete
Many of the industry’s experts believe we will start seeing self-healing concrete being used on roads, buildings and homes. Self-healing concrete is a concrete that heals itself when it comes into contact with air and water that then produces an outer protective layer. This is going to save the industry a lot of time in the years to come. They even predict that by 2030 there will be 5 billion metric tonnes of concrete used in the industry.

BIM Technology
It is said that BIM technology will be the catalyst for a fundamental change in how we manage, design and develop a construction project. 85% of construction stakeholders believe that BIM can enable a better design insight.

Drones
Drone technology continues to rapidly evolve in its accuracy and precision due to its ability to save time, increase safety and keep projects on constant track. It will enable you to keep clients up to date on projects at any time of the day because it will be able to take images on an ongoing basis throughout the project, getting views that are not possible by a human. The use of drones will enable projects to run much smoother due to being able to send them into a building instead of a person, which will improve the safety of the industry.

Wearable Technology
Wearable technology is going to be a big part of the future of construction. It is said to be able to provide better health and safety on site and boost the efficiency of the lifecycle of a project. It is predicted that 250 million smart wearables will be in use by the end of the year.

Do you think these construction trends are going to be a breakthrough for 2019 and continue to evolve and develop the industry? Are you using any of these already? Tweet us @highfieldrec and let us know!

How you can have a successful career in recruitment

Working in recruitment can be daunting. It can be a rollercoaster ride, but it is one that you will want to go and ride again and again. At the age of seven when our parents, teachers or peers asked us what we want to be when we are older, I am sure none of us was shouting “a recruitment consultant”. However, it is a role that can help you build a foundation and a solid career and anyone can take the plunge if they feel that they have what it takes.

There are a few qualities which can help you become a successful recruitment consultant, I have pinpointed a couple. If you feel like any of these reflect you, then why not take the plunge into the world of recruitment.

A confident Communicator

Being a confident communicator is important when working in recruitment because you want to build the most important brand, YOU! Dealing with clients and candidates on a daily basis will be a key part of your role, delivering a great service and building relationships is crucial, so ensuring you can deliver information confidently and in a professional manner will help with your achievements.

Show Tenacity and Be Positive

Getting a no is all part of the game. However, the strength of picking yourself up and moving onto the next is vital. It can be hard to stay positive, however, positivity and determination is a skill that will keep you ahead of the game, a knockback should only encourage your willingness to learn and keep going.

Willingness to Progress

Career Progression in recruitment is an area that attracts most people to the industry. It can be a fast ladder to climb if you have the drive to achieve it. A structured career progression is one thing that most people will be looking for in a career and recruitment can really offer this. You can start as a Graduate/Trainee Recruitment Consultant and with hard work you can climb the ladder consistently throughout your early years in recruitment.

Be persistent and persuasive in a Professional Manner

There is nothing wrong with being persistent and persuasive, however, in the recruitment industry, it can be best to make sure you are doing this in a professional manner. Don’t use the pushy sales person approach, know when to push back when a client says no or if they are ignoring you (it does happen). You are always leaving an impression when you communicate with clients and you don’t want to build your brand negatively. Like our own values at Highfield, always show professionalism and integrity.

Are you looking for a career in recruitment and possess any of the above attributes? Then we want to hear from you! At Highfield Professional Solutions, we pride ourselves on our professionalism, integrity and expertise and we are always on the lookout for talented individuals to join us!

Why Drones are taking over the Construction Industry

Drones are no longer just an expensive high-tech toy for those of us who are lucky enough to be able to afford the hefty price tag and are highly into gadgets. They are now largely being used in billion dollar industries like construction to keep ahead of its competition.

In 2016, consumer drone popularity hit an all-time high, being the number item on a Christmas list that year. In 2016 2.5 million drones were sold in the world, which was almost double than that of 2015. It is predicted that this will increase to around 8 million a year by 2020.

So why has it become so popular for drones to be a crucial part of the construction industry? Well, there are many reasons and it doesn’t look like the use of drones within the industry is slowing down any time soon, with it being the number one trend to continue in 2019. If you want to keep an edge on your competitors then a drone will keep you ahead of the game.

Time

A project in construction can take time, especially at the initial stages. You will need surveys and if there is a way in which this could take as little time as possible and cost you half the money, then you will want to use it. Drones in construction have made surveying much easier by playing a huge role in making data collection simple and capturing the best angles and views.

Clients

You will be able to show clients the progress in a much more quick and efficient way. If your client cannot be at the site, then a use of a drone will be able to capture development in an inventive way that can show angles and images that are better than a photo. You will also be able to keep the client updated on the progress of a project in real time.

Safety

Safety Regulations are crucial for the construction industry and can be difficult to maintain at all times. With a drone, you will be able to capture views that you may not have seen with a naked eye. A drone will be able to view a site in real time from all angles, this can help with safety, especially if you may be dealing with a dangerous structure. It will mean you will be able to send drones into areas that are not necessarily safe for a worker to enter.

Keeping on Track

Keeping on track of a project is important, you are wanting to make sure that everything is running how it should and that you are keeping to budget where possible. Being able to monitor your sites with the use of a drone you will be much better prepared to remove anything that may impact additions to the project time and cost.

Architecture to inspire you

Does architecture inspire you? Does it make you want to stop, look up and reflect on the time it has taken to construct this work of art?

Some of the most amazing architecture in the world has been created from a simple drawing and turned into a piece of art that will stand still. It is not like a painting hung on a wall that can be moved around. It is a still 3D image that can be admired by millions of people.

The Dancing House, Prague.

Famously nicknamed The Dancing House, Prague’s Nationale Nederlanden Building was designed by two architects. Croatian-Czech architect Vlado Milunić in cooperation with Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry.

The very non-traditional design was controversial at the time because the house stands out among the Baroque, Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings for which Prague is famous. The style the dancing house has taken is known as deconstructivist architecture due to its unusual shape. The “dancing” shape is supported by 99 concrete panels, each a different shape and dimension.

Lotus Temple, New Delhi

Situated in New Delhi, The Lotus Temple welcomes worshippers of all faiths. Giving it the status of the most visited building in the world, attracting 100 million people per year. The building was completed in 1986 and consists of 9 sides, 9 doors and a central hall, 40m high to accommodate 2,500 people at once.

It is called The Lotus Temple, quite simply because it is shaped like a Lotus Flower, consisting of 27 structures which resemble each individual petal.

Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur

The Petronas Towers stand at 451.9 meters tall, they once held the title of being the tallest buildings in the world, from 1998 – 2004 and remain the tallest twin towers in the world. Construction started in 1993 and cost $1.6 billion dollars to complete. The twin towers were built on the site of Kuala Lumpur’s race track and have 88 floors.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy

Building work began in 1173 and went on for a further 199 years before completion in 1372. Construction of the tower occurred in three stages over 199 years. Work on the ground floor of the white marble campanile began on August 14, 1173, during a period of military success and prosperity. This ground floor is a blind arcade articulated by engaged columns with classical Corinthian capitals. The tower began to sink after construction had progressed to the second floor in 1178. This was due to a mere three-metre foundation, set in weak, unstable subsoil, a design that was flawed from the beginning. Construction was subsequently halted for almost a century.

The Shard, London

If you are ever visiting London, then you will definitely not miss the shard as it is the tallest building in the UK. The Shard’s construction began in March 2009 and was eventually topped out on 30 March 2012, with it being inaugurated on 5 July 2012. The glass-clad pyramidal tower has 72 habitable floors, with a viewing gallery and open-air observation deck on the 72nd floor, at a height of 244 metres. The project’s architect designed The Shard as a spire-like sculpture emerging from the Thames.

Women in Rail Event

This evening we are proudly sponsoring the Women in Rail event which is taking place in Wiltshire, this event is to celebrate the launch of the WR South – Wiltshire regional group.

Women in Rail was created to improve diversity in the UK rail industry through providing networking opportunities and support for all women within the sector.

“With just 16% of jobs in rail filled by women, we need to understand how we can encourage others to join our industry and not just attract women to the railway, but also to keep, develop and promote them.  We need more women – not just directors and managers but engineers, signallers, graduates and apprentices too – helping us to build the better, more modern railway that Britain needs.” – Women in Rail

The event will be hosted by Anna Delevecchio, commercial Account Director for Amey and lead of the Women in Rail – South alongside Ebony Soltani-James. The event will include a number of speakers from influential people in the Industry as well as Q&A session.

There are a number of events going on in the UK for the next couple of months so don’t miss out on the opportunity to network with influential people in the Rail Industry. Check out the Women in Rails website for more information on events and latest news. http://womeninrail.org/

World Water Week 2018

World Water Week started back in 1991 in Stockholm, it has become the main event to discuss the water issues across the globe and has become the pivotal event of the year to reflect and make a difference to the water issues we have globally. It is organised every year by Stockholm Internalize Water Institute (SIWI).  Back in 2017, over 3,300 individuals and around 380 convening organizations from 135 countries participated in the Week.

Poor water management and strained ecosystems cause poverty and violent conflicts, and to avoid a global water crisis, more nature-based solutions are needed. Each year the event focuses on a new theme, in 2018, World Water Week will address the theme “Water, ecosystems and human development”. Previous themes have consisted of, Minimising Harmful Fluxes from Land to Water, Water and Food Security, Water for Development and many more important issues that affect the globe.

Additionally they offer a recognised prize to an individual who has made a difference to the water crisis. The Stockholm Water Prize is the world’s most prominent award for outstanding achievements in water-related activities. The prize honours women, men and organisations whose work contributes to the conservation and protection of water resources, and to the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants. All who have made extraordinary water-related achievements are eligible.

This year’s main focal point of discussion has been for nature based solutions. Many of the speakers expressed their confidence for nature based solutions and the possibilities they were able to achieve from nature. An example is the work of Stockholm Water Prize winners Professors Bruce Rittmann and Mark van Loosdrecht. Bruce Rittmann said in an interview about this; “Microorganisms live in water and when we use microorganisms we are making water a key part of the solution to many of our environmental challenges.” He added: “We want to have a merging of environmental and economic interests. We don’t want to make pollution control and environmental protection just a cost to society, we want to turn that also into a generator of resources and economic value”.

International Women in Engineering Day – June 23rd

National Women in Engineering Day was launched back in 2014 by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) to celebrate the launch of its 95th anniversary. They aim to celebrate the amazing achievements of female engineers and promotes the vast amount of career opportunities that are available to the female workforce as well as men.  In 2017, they took a bigger step when it became international for the first time due to the interest that was developed by an international audience.

2017 saw a huge success with record levels of engagement and reach. 150 separate events were registered including 18 international events, which involved countries such as Brazil, Mauritius and Uganda.

June 23rd, 2018 marks the 1st anniversary of International Women in Engineering Day (INWED). With the huge success of 2017s day, this year the theme is ‘Raising the Bar’. The theme is a direct approach at making more people aware of the importance of women in these roles, therefore this year they want to encourage more people to get involved. Targeting groups such as the government, education groups, professional engineering institutions, young people’s groups, the press and many more.

Here are a few statistics taken by WES in January 2018 which highlight the importance of making a change now.

  • 11% of the engineering workforce is female.
  • The UK has the lowest percentage of female engineering professionals in Europe, at less than 10%, while Latvia, Bulgaria and Cyprus lead with nearly 30%.
  • 1% of engineering undergraduates in the UK in 2017 are women. Compare with India: where over 30% of engineering students are women.
  • In 2015/16 women accounted for only 6.8% of Engineering apprenticeship starts and 1.9% of Construction Skills starts.
  • 61% of engineering employers say a recruitment of engineering and technical staff with right skills is a barrier to business.

Highfield fully support women in engineering and work with local schools to inspire the next generation of engineers, both male and female, as we recognise fully the benefits of a diverse workforce.

Keep your eyes on our twitter to see us celebrate the achievements of some incredible women engineers, or drop us a tweet @highfieldrec if you have a female engineer you would like to celebrate.

Our new HQ

11 years ago, Liam Thomas and Sam Hughes founded Highfield Professional Solutions in their parent’s house. With the last 8 years being in Botley Mills, we now begin an exciting new chapter in our incredible new home in Durley, which is situated a short distance from Hedge end, Southampton. This new step marks a thrilling growth for Highfield and will represent a big step in our vision going forward.

Entrance

The process of securing a new office space took some time as we wanted to ensure we had a space to grow as well as a space where our employees would want to come to work every day. The much larger and unique office space will create many more opportunities for Highfield, signifying the exciting growth period that we find ourselves in.

The Breakout Area

We now find ourselves in the position of being able to grow to up to 80 employees in this amazing open plan space in the coming years. From the very start of this process all employees were included in having their say in what they would like to see in the new office. Unfortunately, the hot tub was not included, although the suggestion of a dart board to coffee machines and all in-between were taken on board and the team now get to enjoy all the amenities Highfield offer.

The Boardroom

Commenting on the new office, Director, Sam Hughes said,

“Highfield has grown considerably over the last few years and it is extremely exciting to now have an office space that mirrors our ambitions, planned expansion and ongoing success.  We believe we have created the most unique and best working environment on the South Coast to empower all of our staff’’

Office Space

We would like to say a special thank you to local contractor, Leading Edge Builders, who completed the fit out of the new space for us.
